5 Daily Habits to Stop Sciatica From Coming Back
You’ve Found Relief—Now Let’s Keep It That Way
In our previous post about understanding Sciatica, we looked at why that shooting pain happens. But at Health Mantra Physiotherapy, our goal isn't just to stop the pain today—it’s to make sure you never have to deal with those "zaps" again.
Whether you're commuting on the 403 or sitting at your desk in Meadowvale, your daily habits determine your nerve health. Here are 5 expert-backed habits to protect your sciatic nerve.
1. The "20-Minute Move" Rule
The sciatic nerve hates being compressed. If you sit for 8 hours a day, you are constantly "pinching" the blood flow to the nerve.
The Habit: Set a timer on your phone for 20 minutes. Every time it goes off, stand up for just 60 seconds. This small "pressure release" can prevent a massive flare-up.
2. Check Your "Wallet Hip"
Are you sitting on your wallet? Even a thin wallet in your back pocket tilts your pelvis. This puts direct pressure on the piriformis muscle, which sits right on top of the sciatic nerve.
The Habit: Always clear your back pockets before sitting down.
3. Hydrate Your Discs
Your spinal discs are like sponges; they need water to stay bouncy and provide space for your nerves. Dehydrated discs become thin and brittle, leading to the "pinched nerves" we see so often in our Mississauga clinic.
The Habit: Drink 2 liters of water daily to keep your spinal cushions healthy.
4. Sleep with a "Spacer"
If you’re a side sleeper, your top leg can drop forward, twisting your lower back and pulling on the sciatic nerve all night long.
The Habit: Place a firm pillow between your knees. This keeps your hips "square" and your spine neutral.
5. Morning Mobility (Not Just Stretching)
Instead of aggressive stretching first thing in the morning when your discs are most swollen, try gentle mobility.
The Habit: Try "Cat-Cow" or "Nerve Glides" (which we demonstrated in our recent Instagram Reel). These movements help the nerve "slide" through the muscle tissue without being overstretched.
When Habits Aren't Enough
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, the pain lingers. This usually means there is an underlying structural issue—like a disc bulge or joint stiffness—that needs professional hands-on care.
At Health Mantra Physiotherapy, we specialize in identifying these hidden causes before they become chronic problems.
